Deployment of 1,000 GoBook Notebook Computers Continues Long Itronix/Telus
Working Relationship, Keeping Telus Field Technicians at Leading Edge of
Wireless Technology
SPOKANE, WA Itronix Corporation announced that Canadian telecommunications
giant Telus Corporation has completed deployment of 1,000 new Itronix
GoBook computers, the world’s fastest rugged notebook PC for field-based
mobile workforces. The Itronix GoBook, built in part with input from Telus
executives, puts Telus’ field installation and repair technicians at the
leading edge of wireless computing technology, demonstrating the business
benefits resulting from the companies’ working relationship.
Telus has been a pioneer in the use of wireless mobile computers in the
telecommunications industry. It was the first to deploy large numbers of
wireless notebooks to telco field technicians, and today it maintains one
of the largest deployments in North America. The company says its
strategic decision has been justified by measurable increases in
efficiency and customer satisfaction.
“Deployment of wireless technology in the telecommunications industry
may appear to be a logical decision. However, five years ago that wasn’t
the case,” said Hugh Johnson, Program Director at Telus Corporation.
“The easy access to ‘dialtone’ by our technicians made wireless seem
unnecessary. But we were able to prove through time management studies
that a technician could pick up roughly one hour every day by going
wireless. Now, our people wouldn’t have it any other way.”
A History of Innovation
Telus, a Canadian operating unit of Verizon, runs its GoBook wireless
field service deployment on the company’s own Cellular Digital Packet
Data (CDPD) network, providing reliable and constant high-speed digital
connectivity for Telus’ in-field personnel. Telus’ history with
Itronix dates to 1994 when it acquired its first set of Itronix T-4000
wireless handheld computing devices. Since then, the company has purchased
other Itronix handheld and notebook products including the T-5000, X-C
6000, X-C 6250 Pro, and now the GoBook.

“Telus and Itronix have worked closely to maximize technician
productivity,” said Brian Yurkiw, Director of Sales, Itronix
Corporation. “Our ongoing relationship has allowed Telus to increase
efficiency and keep labor costs down. This spirit of cooperation has been
extremely beneficial to both companies.”
When designing the GoBook, Itronix relied on the input of customers like
Telus who participated in the company’s Product Advisory Council.
“Telus Corporation’s input on the GoBook helped Itronix develop a
solution that meets our current and future needs,” said Johnson.
“GoBook offers the ruggedization, long battery life, and advanced
wireless capability necessary for our highly technical mobile workforce.
Plus we have benefited from a significantly lower frequency of repair with
Itronix products, which helps keep our people productive and our service
levels high,” Johnson noted.
Unparalleled Speed, Durability, Versatility
GoBook offers the latest in powerful PC laptop architecture. Standard
specifications include an Intel Celeron CPU delivering 600 Mhz of
processing power, 256 MB SDRAM, a 2.5” 6/10/20 GB hard drive, and a
12.1” SVGA TFT color display. It offers Itronix’ proprietary
CRMA (Common Radio Module Architecture, pronounced “Karma”)
field-upgradable wireless technology that allows users to easily upgrade
radio modems or change networks in the field, eliminating the need for
depot returns.
